In order to be recognized as an independent contractor in the state of Montana, you must first obtain an Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate (ICEC):

  • Go to: http://erd.dli.mt.gov/work-comp-regulations/montana-contractor
    Read through all of the information and hit the “Applications and forms – ICEC and CR” link on the right hand side of the page
  • Download the Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate Application that applies to your status (i.e. Sole Proprietor, Manager of a Manager-Managed LLC, etc.)
  • Complete the ICEC application, have it notarized, and mail it to the Independent Contractor Central Unit (address on application) along with a $125.00 check
  • Follow up with the Independent Contractor Central Unit to ensure that your ICEC application has been received and that everything is in order

In order to be recognized as an independent contractor in the state of Washington, you must first obtain a Washington business license:

-Complete the business license form and pay the $19 application fee.  There will be an additional $5 fee if you wish to register a trade name.

-If you wish to form a corporation in the state of Washington, please complete the additional application at www.secstate.wa.gov/corps.

-Your business license may take up to 10 business days to process.
