Briefly describe your pre-medical and/or pre-locum work experience
I worked at a correctional institution and rural ERs.

What drew you to locum tenens work?
I wanted flexibility in my schedule.

Why did you choose WMS?
The staff is great to work with. They have your best interests in mind and make sure your assignments run smoothly.

What have you enjoyed most about your locum tenens experiences?
I enjoy the flexible schedule. Working in rural areas is enjoyable, the regular staff appreciate the help and have always been friendly and welcoming.

What surprised you the most about your locum tenens experiences?
I thought there would be a lot of pressure to pick up shifts. WMS has been very accommodating to my regular work schedule and there is never any pressure to work more than I want to.

How has your experience been with WMS?
WMS is a great group of people to work with. They always make sure I am taken care of and happy with my assignments.

What stands out to you about the communities and cultures you have interacted with as a locum tenens provider?
I always enjoy the activities that small towns have, especially in the short summer months. Rural areas get all geared up for their big summer festivals, parades and rodeos. I always enjoy the activities when I am not working.

What advice do you have for prospective locum tenens providers?
Make sure you are flexible! Things aren’t always what you are used to and to be a successful locum you need to be adaptable. If you are someone that has specific expectations you will probably be frustrated as a locum. You need to be able to adapt to each location and work with the staff to provide care. Patient care comes first and sometimes you need to let the littles things go.

What’s the most interesting thing that you learned while on assignment?
I feel like I am always learning! It is interesting to travel between rural areas and see the different patient populations in each place. I think rural ERs teach you to handle everything and it improves your critical thinking skills. I have also learned to rely on regular staff to help with logistics of patient transfers.

Is there anything else you would like to share?
I really enjoy working as a locum for WMS. I plan on working more once my children are grown and I have more flexibility to travel.
