For most locum providers, an assignment means packing a bag and going solo. For Michelle H., it means packing for five. Her husband and kids travel with her to her coastal village postings in Southeast Alaska, turning what could be a season of separation into a season the whole family experiences together.
And they don’t just tag along — they become part of the community. Locals invite Michelle’s family into their homes for meals, teach her kids skills they’d never pick up in a classroom, and treat their departure at the end of an assignment like saying good-bye to family of their own. It’s the kind of cultural immersion no curriculum can replicate: her children have watched whales breach just offshore, gone salmon fishing with locals, stood beneath glaciers, and explored tide pools full of sea stars and anemones.
There’s a genuine exchange happening underneath all of it. Michelle brings healthcare a community needs; often care that would otherwise be non-existent. In return, the community gives her family something equally valuable: local knowledge, tradition, and a version of Alaska most visitors never get close to. It’s stewardship in both directions. She’s caring for the community’s health, and they’re entrusting her family with a piece of their way of life.
By the time an assignment wraps, Michelle’s family isn’t just passing through anymore. They’re missed. And they’re already looking forward to the next place this work will take them.
