Montana Locum Tenens Licensing

Practicing locum tenens in Montana requires a state-issued license for each profession. Timelines vary, but most providers allow four to five weeks for NP, PA, and CRNA applications, and approximately 30 days for physicians. Montana does not issue temporary licenses for PAs, so starting the application process early is especially important for that profession.

Montana also has two state-specific requirements that apply across all professions and are easy to overlook: the Montana Prescription Drug Registry (MPDR) and the Montana Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate (ICEC). The MPDR is the state’s prescription drug monitoring program and is required for all licensed prescribers. The ICEC functions as Montana’s business license for independent contractors and must be active before any 1099 provider begins work.
