I enjoy meeting new people, working with new people, and being able to serve communities that otherwise would not receive close access to medical care. The main thing that drew me to Wilderness Medical Staffing is the locations that the organization serves. I love the Northwest and the people of the Northwest. Wilderness Medical Staffing has been a wonderful organization to work with. Everyone I have worked with is professional, informative, and willing to answer any questions I have had.
While in Saipan, I heard of a guy who worked in the ED prior to my arrival who moved to Alaska and started working with a locum company call WMS. A few years later when I was unhappy at my employment, I called WMS and have been happily self-employed since. WMS has really been great to work with. WMS has the personal touch as Mary Ellen has worked in many of these communities herself so she and her staff understand the bumps in the road or logistical problems that may occur along the way. If you like variety and love to see new places this is the job for you. My wife has traveled with me to several locum locations and I know other providers who have taken their whole family to different locations to share the experience with loved ones as well. Also, as a locum provider you get to decide how much or how little you want to work.
I chose WMS because of the locations that they staff, and I appreciate that they are familiar with and often have worked at the places that they’re sending us. I really enjoy getting to know the people that make up the communities where I’m staffing. There is a lot of heart and soul that makes smaller communities run, and I find the patients and the staff I’m working with to be kind, welcoming, gracious, and adaptable. I was a little intimidated when I started my first few assignments, especially being at solo provider sites. But I’ve found that my locums work has improved my confidence and my skills. I like the challenge of working with different resources available to me, and I found that there’s always a really strong and sympathetic network of consultants all around the state that are there to help you succeed. I never really felt alone in caring for my patients. WMS has been a great company to work with! I feel well supported, with excellent communication before, during, and after assignments.
Working with WMS, I feel like I am part of a family. WMS staff are always friendly and very attentive. I have learned so much everywhere I go. I have had a variety of experiences from small community clinics in MT and AK, to working in school-based clinics on tribal reservations in MT, to working in small community hospitals, and working in native village clinics in remote locations in AK.
WMS is a great group of people to work with. They always make sure I am taken care of and happy with my assignments. Working in rural areas is enjoyable, the regular staff appreciate the help and have always been friendly and welcoming. I thought there would be a lot of pressure to pick up shifts. WMS has been very accommodating to my regular work schedule and there is never any pressure to work more than I want to. I really enjoy working as a locum for WMS. I plan on working more once my children are grown and I have more flexibility to travel.
I love working with WMS. When issues do arrive with travel or anything else, WMS has my back. I feel that I am part of a team with WMS. Other than meeting new people and seeing new landscapes, for me it has been the professional growth just from the exposure to seeing how things are done differently throughout different healthcare organizations. Mary Ellen and the crew at Wilderness Medical Staffing have opened many doors for me professionally, affording me and my family an intimate connection with native and non-native villages throughout interior Alaska. Wilderness Medical Staffing is a delightful and exciting company to work for. The clinic placements range from suburban to rural. Mary Ellen Doty, ANP and owner has transportation and housing arranged for the provider before they arrive so you simply need to begin working. Bush Alaska presents many challenges and Mary Ellen knows by experience what those challenges are as she has worked in many of those clinics herself, which leads to the support you will receive from her while you are in an assignment…Lower 48 staffing companies don’t understand the challenges faced by the practitioners in bush Alaska, but Wilderness Medical Staffing does, end of story.

You are very kind, informative and take personal interest in your locums providers, as well as locums locations. Following our first conversation, I felt very comfortable and confident that my first working experiences in Alaska would be great.
I’m prompted to say this because, since starting locums, I have been contacted by several other agencies that have only made me feel like a ‘product’ or ‘commodity.’ It really seemed like I was speaking with used car salesmen who were trying to make a commission despite what that meant for me.
