Briefly describe your pre-medical and/or pre-locums work experience
I worked for several years in Tennessee doing outdoor education, wilderness mentoring programs, and as a wilderness EMT. I also worked almost 6 years in Knoxville, Tennessee on 911 EMS service as an advanced EMT.
What drew you to locum tenens work?
I enjoy meeting new people, working with new people, and being able to serve communities that otherwise would not receive close access to medical care.
Why did you choose WMS?
The main thing that drew me to Wilderness Medical Staffing is the locations that the organization serves. I love the Northwest and the people of the Northwest.
What have you enjoyed most about your locum tenens experiences?
Seeing different communities all across the state of Montana, meeting the people, and the challenge of providing high level medical care in areas where resources are sometimes limited.
What surprised you the most about your locum tenens experiences?
The need for locums support.
How has your experience been with WMS?
Wilderness Medical Staffing has been a wonderful organization to work with. Everyone I have worked with is professional, informative, and willing to answer any questions I have had.
What stands out to you about the communities and cultures you have interacted with as a locum tenens provider?
What stands out the most to me about the communities and cultures of Montana is the fact that everywhere I have gone the people have been helpful, understanding, and welcoming. I love the small-town atmosphere and the beauty of the surroundings.
What advice do you have for prospective locum tenens providers?
The best advice I can offer prospective local providers in rural settings is to be adaptable. At every location take time to familiarize oneself with what medications, equipment, and nursing level of care that is present at that location. Secondly, rely upon the nurses who have been there – they know what is available and many times they know the patient’s history. If you value them and show respect they will be your greatest asset.
What’s the most interesting thing that you learned while on assignment?
There is an amazing pizza joint Big Sandy Montana!
